What Our Team Says (Employee Reviews)
"I have been a UPS fleet mechanic for nine years and the professional development alone makes this the best shop I have worked in. UPS sent me to Daimler training for the eSprinter EV platform, Cummins engine diagnostics school, and Allison Transmission certification — all fully paid. The Teamsters wage for a fully qualified UPS mechanic is the highest I have seen in the commercial vehicle repair market in this state, and the pension that comes with it is something no private shop can offer. Best fleet mechanic job I have found in this industry." - Current Fleet Mechanic, Pittsburgh, PA.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
As a UPS Fleet Mechanic, you perform preventive maintenance, diagnostic troubleshooting, and component-level repair on the UPS ground fleet — including gasoline, diesel, propane, compressed natural gas, and electric package car platforms — inside a UPS maintenance facility operating under DOT commercial vehicle inspection standards and manufacturer service specifications.
- Preventive Maintenance Execution: Complete UPS's Type A through Type D preventive maintenance inspections on assigned vehicles — including engine oil and filter changes, brake adjustment and lining measurement, tire rotation and pressure calibration, lighting system verification, and hydraulic system fluid checks — documenting every finding in the UPS Fleet Management System (FleetFocus M5) within two hours of inspection completion so vehicle availability data is current for the dispatch team's morning planning cycle.
- Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Connect vehicle onboard diagnostic systems to Nexiq USB Link adapters and manufacturer-specific diagnostic software — Cummins INSITE for diesel engines, Daimler Xentry for eSprinter EV platforms, Ford IDS for gasoline P700 package cars — pulling fault codes, interpreting freeze-frame data, and developing a component-specific repair plan before ordering parts to prevent repeat repair cycle waste.
- DOT Annual Inspection Compliance: Complete annual DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards inspections on all UPS fleet vehicles in the assigned maintenance pool — measuring brake lining thickness against 49 CFR Part 393 minimum standards, verifying lighting compliance, inspecting frame integrity and suspension components, and generating the DOT inspection sticker and documentation package required to maintain each vehicle's commercial roadworthiness certification.
Benefits & Perks
UPS Fleet Mechanics receive Teamsters union skilled-trade wages — one of the highest hourly rates in the UPS hourly workforce — full medical, dental, and vision benefits through the Teamsters Health & Welfare Fund, a defined-benefit pension, paid vacation, paid holidays, and continuous factory-direct technical training at Cummins, Daimler, Ford, and Allison facilities fully funded by UPS. Tool allowances and uniforms are provided. No day ends without the satisfaction of knowing a driver will go out tomorrow because you kept their vehicle road-ready today.
